Anthony BurrillAnthony Burrill

“WORK HARD AND BE NICE TO PEOPLE” not only forms the mantra of Anthony Burrill’s celebrated poster, but also one of the secrets of his own success. Evidence is to be found within the current broad range of activities in which Anthony works, including print, advertising, moving image, exhibitions, installations and products, together with the innovative collaborations with friends and fellow artists, designers, print-makers and film-makers he keeps.

He combines an instinctive handling of colour and composition with a witty approach to words; it’s persuasive, up-beat and beautifully simple, and has been commissioned by cultural, social and commercial clients around the world. The Economist, Hermes, the British Library and the London Underground are recent recipients of advertising campaigns and posters. Kraftwerk, Air and David Holmes have all collaborated with Anthony, and his work has been exhibited at Colette in Paris, Tate Modern and the Art Space in LA.

“Keep it simple!”.

Anthony’s studied Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art where an appreciation for simplicity was developed. His early handcrafted photocopy books are great examples of such a straightforward style. Friendchip, an accidental early collaboration with Kip Parker, “He was the first person I knew who was connected to the internet”, resulted in early website experiments; lacking a scanner Anthony had to draw using an old PC, with the work forming an aesthetic of “ceefax crossed with binatone”.

Lancashire born, Anthony now lives and works on the Isle of Oxney, Kent.

“Once you’ve got somebody smiling the rest is easy.” - Anthony Burrill.
