The final leg...
We made it! Since our last update we crossed the border into the truly beautiful mountains of Kyrgzstan, hitting the dirt tracks and following some of the wildest rivers we've ever seen. Heading for the Kazak border we managed to boil the motor and this was the start of the overheating problems. While we were waiting for the car to cool some locals stopped by and a kid on a horse, we taught him how to play Frisbee while the guys shared their bottle of vodka with us, we returned the favour with whiskey, and we hit the road again starting to learn that the good times seem to come out of the bad ones on this trip! Back into Kazakhstan and the roads got pretty bad, dirt is ok, even potholed dirt is ok, but cracked and potholed tarmac the worse, driving up the bone shaking road you have to pick the smoothest line regardless of which side of the road its on! It was here when we pulled up one evening to cook up, and some of our friends said "you see those mountains over there? That's China", it was now that it really hit how far we had come! Back into Russia and having to put our foot down now, Dom pulled off 24hrs straight behind the wheel to make the Mongolian border for when it opened Monday morning, only to be held at the border for over 36hrs. Now a day behind we had to drop the hammer. Driving the truck across the desert as fast as it would go was awesome fun but it was taking its toll. The suspension was breaking up and then we got stuck in a river with a flooded motor and water rushing in the doors! Thankfully the locals came to our rescue and pushed us out. After that another break down that meant Tom chasing a guy around town looking under the bonnet of all his mate’s cars to see if they had the part we needed! Bodged it and it held out for the last push to Ulan Bataar, driving late into the night on the tracks over the mountains and then finally hitting Ulan Bataar Saturday afternoon, just in time for the finish line party! It has been a truly amazing journey, we've seen a lot of cool stuff, and met some amazing people and would like to say a massive thank you to 2am for helping us out. If you want to see more of what we got up to, there's a video coming soon.
