Substatic

On Saturday night i was invited along to see 'Substatic', my friend Colleen's band play at Monto Water Rats on Gray's Inn Road. I have seen far too many 'friends bands' in my time so it was with a fair amount of trepidation that i rolled up to the venue and paid my entrance fee.

Having grabbed a drink i went and found myself a good spot to stand and watch the band along with Terri, 2AM's receptionist/PA extraordinaire/token Northerner. The band came on and i admit i steadied myself with the knowledge that afterwards i could always just use my fallback line of "what can i say?" before giving her a big hug...
To call their set a pleasant surprise is to sell them short. There were no ropey Minor Threat covers, out of tune guitars and vocals or threats of violence from the audience if they didn't stop playing. Instead we were treated to half an hour of melodic synth driven electro-pop in the vein of Goldfrapp or Chew Lips.
After the set i gave Colleen a big hug and for the first time in my life was entirely honest when i said to her "what can i say?, that was fucking awesome!!!"
