Isabella Rossellini’s ‘Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Animal Courtship (But Were Afraid to Ask)’

…or perhaps didn’t give a rat’s ass about but curiosity got in the way of your blissful ignorance.If like me you spent most of your childhood asking adults about how dolphins sleep this could be of some interest.

When Isabella Rossellini, she of the porcelain complexion gracing numerous Lancome ads and the best thing in ‘Blue Velvet’, decided she wanted to start directing she got a call from Robert Redford. A small budget followed and ‘Green Porno’ was born. Dealing with the topic of animal mating in a colourful, quirky, fun way, Rossellini made three pilots (each a few minutes long), Redford and Sundance liked it and she got a green light to make more. ‘Green Porno’ was a success that went on to win awards and subsequently allowed Rossellini to make ‘Seduce Me’. This follow up series tells stories about animal courtship and like ‘Green Porno’ they are really fun to watch. The art direction is great and Rossellini gets to dress up in animal costumes made of foam, swim in papier mache seas and talk about bizarre ways animals ‘date’ Now I know why if you are an anchovy it is important to stay in the middle of your school and why those fragile looking creatures called dragonflies could be sued for domestic violence if they were human. Wait until you learn hear about the ducks…

The films can be seen on YouTube but they will also go on show on 11tt of February at the National History Museum as part of the ‘Sexual Nature’ exhibition.
